Email survey

An email survey reaches its recipient as an email. One question sits in the message itself: its answer options are rendered as buttons, and a click on any of them opens the full survey on our domain with that answer already selected. The visitor answers the remaining questions there. An answer counts only once the form is submitted — the click in the email records nothing by itself.

The Email tab: copy on the left, the email as recipients will get it on the right.

Under the hood it is an on-site survey with an email in front: the same steps and fields, the same hosted page at /s/{surveyId}, the same access modes. It is sent to a list of addresses from Campaigns.

Use cases

  • After a purchase, a delivery or a visit — a rating question the same day, right in the inbox.
  • After a closed support request.
  • NPS or a recurring survey over a known list of customers or employees.

The question in the email

Which question goes into the email is decided by the Show in the email checkbox on a field's Meta tab. Only one question can carry it; when the survey is created, the first eligible field gets it automatically. Any question qualifies except text blocks and sections:

  • a single-choice question (single choice, yes/no, rating, a matrix scale) appears in the email as buttons — one per option;
  • every other kind (text, date, multiple choice…) as the question itself and one "Answer" button.

Further down, the email always has a button that opens the survey with no answer selected — its label is set on the Email tab.

The Email tab

  • Subject and Button text — in every language of the domain; the other languages can be filled in one click ("AI translate").
  • On the right, a preview of the email exactly as the server will render it when sending: the company name, the form title, the question, the button, and at the bottom who sent it plus links to the privacy policy, the terms and unsubscribing. Clicking an answer in the preview opens the survey preview with that answer — the whole chain can be checked without sending a single email.

The email's colours come from the survey's theme (Attributes).

A new email survey is created with the Per-recipient links access mode: every recipient gets a link of their own, which shows who answered — and this is the mode a campaign needs. The other modes (Open, Shared link) are described on the on-site survey page: they're useful when you send the link yourself, but a campaign won't work with them.

Whether a link can be answered twice is decided by Block duplicate submissions under Settings: with it on, a link is single-use, and a later campaign skips that recipient.

Unsubscribing

Every email carries an Unsubscribe link. An unsubscribed address gets no further email survey from your company — any survey, not just this one — and every later campaign silently skips it. The list of unsubscribed addresses is shown nowhere.

Publishing requirements

The basic set — a step, a field, all translations — plus two requirements of its own, both hard errors: one of the questions must carry "Show in the email", and the subject and button text must be filled in for every one of the domain's locales. The main evaluation and feedback questions are only a warning, as with an on-site survey.

Creating this type with AI isn't available: a draft doesn't pick the question for the email.
